Bongeunsa - Gangnam-Gu
In the 15th century, dedicated queens helped rebuild and expand the temple to its current location. Even during the Confucianism-led dynasty, the national monk examination was reinstated after a long hiatus.
Visit Bongeunsa and immerse yourself in Korean Buddhism revival.
Hwagyesa Temple: - Jongno-Gu
Find calm at Hwagyesa Temple, a popular spot for monks and nuns from around the world. They want to learn Seon Buddhism, which is like Japanese Zen and Chinese Chan.
Hidden in Samgak Mountain and built in 1522, Hwagyesa Temple is near Seoul but feels far away. As you enter through the One Pillar Gate, you'll find a different world. Even though the city is close, the temple is surrounded by nature. You can hear the sound of water flowing in the valley below, and people often stop by the stream to relax and soak their feet.
Jogyesa Temple: - Jungno-Gu
As the main temple of the Jogye Order, the most prominent branch of Korean Buddhism, Jogyesa Temple serves as the symbol of Korean Buddhism. Because it is situated in the center of the Korean capital, the temple may not have the typical Korean traditional temple scenery. However, you can still enjoy seeing diverse temple buildings in the downtown region.
On the temple grounds, the Jogye Order's administrative headquarters are located. In addition, Insadong, Gyeongbok-gung Palace, Changdeok-gung Palace, and other well-known landmarks are nearby, creating a cultural district that pleases most tourists.
Geumsunsa Temple: - Gangbuk-Gu
Geumsunsa is a 600-year-old ancient Korean Buddhist temple situated in Bukhansan National Park and easily accessible from Seoul. The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism's 14th parish, Beomeosa Temple, which houses Geumsunsa, is a branch of that temple.
Geumsunsa is just thirty minutes from Gwanghwamun Square. It is situated in Guk Dong, Jongno Gu, in front of Mount Inwangsan, close to the Blue House and Gyeongbokgung Palace.
The Hongyaekyo (Bridge of Nirvana) at the temple is crossed by a mountain stream that originates from Beebong Peak and Hyangrobong Peak in Mount Bukhansan National Park. This gives you a sense of the temple's natural beauty given its location in the heart of Seoul.
